The College of Charleston Magazine - Editorial Writing
I write journalistic pieces for the College of Charleston Magazine. Specifically, I write profile features of CofC students, faculty, and alumni.
Client
The College of Charleston Magazine is an award-winning biannual magazine for the College of Charleston, a public university based in Charleston, South Carolina.
Project
I write 500-word profile stories highlighting College of Charleston students, faculty, and alumni. I'm assigned stories on an ad-hoc basis and have an agreed-upon deadline ranging from two weeks to two months. Each piece requires one to two interviews.
Process
Before I write a profile story, I communicate with the editor to gather any necessary information. For example, the contact information for interview sources. I then reach out to those sources to introduce myself and gather additional material that will aid my research process. This includes suggested articles and other relevant resources that will support the preliminary research stage.
After performing preliminary research, I brainstorm questions to ask sources and conduct interviews with them over the phone or on Zoom. The interviews are recorded with the source's permission and transcribed using Otter. I pull quotes from the transcription and then build a detailed outline.
Later, I write the profile, edit it using Grammarly, and submit a draft to the editor. If the editor has feedback, I revise the draft based on the edits and resubmit the finalized version to the editor.
Deliverable
The final product is a compelling, character-driven piece that celebrates the College of Charleston community. View all of my pieces for the College of Charleston Magazine by clicking an article link below.
